Deep Creek Hot Springs
It was a perfect day for a 12 mile hike to the world famous Deep Creek Hot Springs along the PCT. We started early with a clear morning and a great attitude. We knew it wouldn’t be easy but well worth it. It wasn’t our first time making this hike and we knew what to expect it. I already knew I hated two parts of this trail, the walk across the dam and the switchbacks to the trail. I swear the switchbacks getting longer and longer every time we do this hike.
Last year we had one of the worst winters in recent history. It was obvious on the trail. There was a large rock slide that took a bit of scrambling to get around. There was another mud slide that we had to climb over. The trail definitely needs to some maintenance to make it safer for everyone, especially those with no skills. We encountered to men on bikes on the trail as well. I am not sure how they got the bikes over the slides but props for succeeding.
Once we made it to the hot springs we were very disappointed. It was crowded and no room in the pools. Most people were dressed but there were a few that were not. There was one man naked dancing around twirling a large staff. It was very interesting to say the least. There was another young lady posing naked for pictures along the river. We also seen a naked man climbing the rocks, not sure where he ended up.
We found a quiet place to have lunch and relax. It was beautiful and peaceful with a brisk breeze. I was very disappointed when we walked down that there is a large pile of broken tents, tarps, clothes, trash and beer bottles next to a sign that says “Pack it in and Pack it out”, the irony right? I will share the video of that pile. We packed up and headed out back down the trail. We really didn’t see many people on the trail that we took, most take the shorter route via Bowen Ranch.
We didn’t see much wildlife, a few squirrels and some very large bear skat. The last 2 miles were just rough. Especially the last mile across the dam, and yes it is exactly a mile. We were so excited to see the yellow gate at the end and our ride waiting. We were tired, sore and so hungry.
Please, if you are going to enjoy our natural resources, please take your trash home with you. We only have one planet, lets now destroy it. Until next time, get out there and hike!
